The Google Pixel 9 phones arrive next month, ahead of the iPhone 16 launch

Something to look forward to: Google is gearing up for another annual showdown between new flagship smartphones and archrival Apple. Reports indicate that the upcoming Pixel 9 series could introduce camera, chassis and AI improvements. Meanwhile, the Cupertino giant is preparing to launch a mobile AI race with hardware and software updates this fall.

This year’s Made By Google event is set for August 13, where the company is expected to unveil the Pixel 9 phones. New Pixel products, such as a foldable tablet, watch and headphones, are also likely to be shown.

The company usually introduces Pixel phones in October. Moving the Pixel 9 reveal to August will put it, for the first time, ahead of the anticipated September reveal of the new iPhones.

At least two models – Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro – are expected to appear, but a Pixel 9 Pro XL is also rumored. Concepts leaked from earlier this year suggest that the Pro variant will have flat sides and a new rear camera. The large camera bump can accommodate a variable aperture lens.

An optional “adaptive touch” feature may also appear on at least one Pixel 9 model. After enabling the feature under Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity, the display will reportedly change the touch screen sensitivity to compensate for obstacles like hands wet or screen protectors, maximizing touch.

The Google Pixel Fold 2 is also rumored to debut at next month’s event, featuring a 7.9-inch internal display and a 6.4-inch external display, stretching to 6.1 inches x 5.9 inches x 0.2 inches when unfolded. The leaked renders show a significantly redesigned rear camera. Instead of a fully custom SoC, the Fold 2 and Pixel 9 series devices will run on the Tensor G4 processor, based on Samsung’s Exynos design.

Meanwhile, reports about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 do not suggest drastic changes in design. Some models may be larger than before, with more real screens and a more accessible battery case. In addition, the iPhone 16 may receive the first increase in the number of NPU cores in four years.

The move could significantly boost Apple’s new ambitions in generative artificial intelligence — the latest battleground between Cupertino’s phones and Google. The upcoming Android 15 system is expected to strengthen Gemini AI, which Google introduced with last year’s Pixel 8 Pro phones. Apple’s iOS 18 will unlock similar functionality for the iPhone 15 Pro and at least one iPhone 16 variant.
